Video tutorials have been on the rise for some time now, given the fact that you can learn just about anything from a video tutorial it is not surprising. Even 5-10 years ago you could see the trend starting to emerge. At first, video tutorials seem to be a supplemental way of learning on top of the traditional on-ground, hands on approach but as online learning started to take hold Youtube and companies such as CGCircuit, Udemy, Pluralsight and Linkedin Learning among others started to rise to the occasion.
These sites offer skill development in all areas of learning from Branding and Marketing, to learning VFX skills for Game and Animation to “How to start your own Vlog. ” These sites and others have made learning reachable and understandable to just about everyone. Some sites are free while others charge a small fee but all of them are cheaper than most on-ground and hands-on learning institutions. This is not to promote that they are a replacement but rather than they are available to everyone. That alone makes them the most powerful learning resource of our generation and the generations to come.
1. VISUAL LEARNING
It has been estimated that around 65% of the population are visual learners. Meaning that they learn best by visual communication using maps, graphs, pictures, videos and even color and composition as they are spatial learners that thrive in a learning environment that allows for visual instruction. They are often the ones that read instructions well if it includes diagrams and pictures and since around 90% of the information that comes to us is visual, visual learners themselves tend to be in careers that are highly visual; artistic creative careers and careers that include a sense of spatial awareness and planning. Some of those careers include Architecture, Film, Graphic Design, 3D VFX, Animation and other artistic and creative visual careers. Do you want to loose the attention of a visual learner? Just give them never ending blocks of text without any visual stimuli and you will surely loose them quickly.
2. AUDITORY LEARNING
Have you ever met an auditory learner? Around 30% of our population are Auditory learners. I bet you have without even knowing, think about those learners that listen intently and remember pretty much everything that’s been said. Those people in your life that remember every little detail you tell them from good to bad, it just seems to stick for them when you might remember it more visually they will remember the words said and might even be able to repeat the conversation word for word. Auditory learners are great in a debate, great for group projects, chats, they remember fine details of a book they read or they can read and digest the details of an instruction manual without needing the pictures. They are often the one’s raising their hands for questions, they do well with audio/video learning, learning through songs, and listening to lectures and are often giving feedback for it is with words that they communicate as well. You will often find them in careers such as Musicians, Vocalists, Counselors, Lawyers, Broadcasters, Interpreters, and any other field that relies upon auditory and communication.
3. KINESTHETIC LEARNING
Know someone that fidgets in their seat? Seems to have a hard time concentrating on just lecture alone? They might work best in an interactive environment with group challenges or hands-on projects. Around %5 of the population are Kinesthetic learners meaning they learn best through touch often times tactile learning processes such as building something or using their body (such as in sports or dance) while learning works best for them. They may be very high-energy type person, a very physical type. Often times Kinesthetic learners are someone that loves to experiment, maybe an entrepreneur type that enjoys challenges but finds it hard to stay in one place . Good career choices for them would be sports, mechanics, construction, farming, and physical therapy.
4. PAUSE, REWIND, REPEAT, RETAIN
Personally I enjoy video tutorials for the fact that I can come back to them so often, taking my time to really understand the material and working along with the tutorial to try out the demo myself. Often times video tutorials are offered through learning platforms or online communities where there is a back-and-forth sometimes between the author of the tutorial and the learner or in cases of forums and communities the learner can ask the community as well as the author for advice, mentorship and instruction. The idea that video tutorials are self-paced as well can be helpful, when the learner can pause, rewind and repeat at their own leisure they retain more than when trying to jot down notes during, even a mid-paced lecture. When it comes to employee learning processes around 75% more likely to watch a video than to learn in any other capacity such as notes, emails, manuals, etc. so the power of video learning is pretty huge and you can see that it also works well for all learning styles. So it is no wonder such a large percentage prefer video tutorial learning and online community platforms for feedback and mentorship as well as retaining the information they learn. Video tutorial learning is an easy form of communication that works well with everyone.
5. ENTERTAINMENT & LEARNING
We all love to be entertained and we love movies, whether they are short films or long features we love fiction and documentaries, true crimes and thrillers. Learning by using entertainment formats such as short films, historical or factual documentaries or online webinars or video tutorials; most everyone would agree that learning via video or film is the best, most exciting and easiest way to learn and retain what you have learned. In today’s market millennials make up 92% of the digital video viewing audience and the millennial market is the largest market in today’s industry. Today’s youth are social, community driven, self-starters, self-learners, and they value their time, their money and their education. Video tutorial marketplaces and communities that allow for networking, one-on-one communication with the video author and community mentorship are a must for today’s learner and those are just some of the main reasons why videos are a great way to learn!
