Haptic is derived from the Greek word “haptesthai” which means to touch.
To “touch music” to feel it’s vibrations on your skin would be a feeling of heaven for those that cannot hear the beautiful sound of music. Recent developments in this area have led to some pretty cool futuristic looking Tron style shirts that let you literally feel the music.
The soundshirt is a cool shirt by cutecircuit and you can buy it online at cutecircuit.com.
As we discussed in HAPTIC TECHNOLOGY – Part 1. haptic touch feels like vibrations or motion geared toward helping you “feel” virtual objects in VR or other computer simulations but as you can see here it has more real world function that meets the eye. For those with sensory loss it can hold the key to a fuller reality, one of music and sound.
We also discussed some of the developments and market places that drive the development of Haptic technology such as mobile phones, fashion, gaming, automotive, medical uses and much more. Major developments in these areas will continue to grow along with the VR / AR mixed reality developments and the use of Haptic technology in the future will be commonplace.
Another amazing recent development is the “soft artificial skin” being developed by EPFL
this soft artificial skin made with silicone and electrodes allow for the skin to be flexible and adjust to the wearer’s wrist relaying vibrations in the form of pressure in real-time to allow for the sense of touch. This is a pretty amazing advancement for the medical field as well as other industries such as gaming and more.
Haptic technology is just part of the immersive reality that you will find being developed into most common products, you will find yourself in the near future feeling for nobs and buttons in mid-air, feeling textures, feeling vibrations of sound from your clothes and accessories as well . There are so many different uses for haptics that the marketplace and investors have forecasted a growth of 22 Billion dollars by 2023.
